Where to get the Grappling Hook

The Grappling Hook is a Valheim 1.0 traversal tool found through Mistlands progression. Search Infested Mines for hidden stone doors marked by small glowing blue glyphs; the Dvergr Treasure Chests behind those doors can contain the Hook that unlocks the recipe.

The Hook is not guaranteed in the first mine. In multiplayer, every crafted Grappling Hook needs its own Hook item, so a group may need to clear several Infested Mines.

Grappling Hook recipe

Craft the item at a Black Forge after obtaining the Hook.

One collected guide listed a Workbench instead of a Black Forge. The first-hand 1.0 report from PC Gamer identifies the Black Forge, so this page uses that result rather than repeating the conflicting claim.

How to use it

Equip the Grappling Hook and hold the primary attack to load the shot. Aim at a surface in range and release to fire. Press the jump control to reel yourself toward the attachment point; use secondary attack to release the chain.

The tool pulls and suspends the player rather than producing a wide swinging arc. It consumes stamina, and doing nothing while hanging causes a slow descent. Practice near the ground before relying on it above a Mistlands drop.

Why the hook does not attach

Check the simple causes before treating a failed shot as a bug:

  • The target is outside the hook's usable range.
  • The load animation has not completed before release.
  • Terrain blocks line of sight to the chosen point.
  • The surface or angle does not accept the hook.
  • Stamina is too low to complete the climb.

A failed attachment can still leave the player exposed to fall damage. Carry enough stamina food for vertical routes and keep a safe landing path in view.
