What is in Valheim's Deep North?

The Deep North is Valheim 1.0's final biome. It occupies the far north of the world, across ocean from earlier landmasses, and replaces the old placeholder region with a complete progression chain: Winding Tunnels, Frost Cores, Bloodgold, the Frigid Kiln, Frost Foundry, Mörkhalla dungeons, Jotun Invasions, Aesir Passages, and Kall Fimbulbringer.

Cold is a constant threat. Snowstorms can apply freezing damage unless the player has suitable frost-resistant clothing or Frost Resistance mead, and the coast contains ice that makes a careless landing dangerous.

Prepare before sailing north

Defeat Fader first. Fader's progression drop is used for the Eternal Pyre, which attracts Embers needed in Deep North crafting. Embers do not come from the Deep North itself, so stock them before committing to a long northern expedition.

Bring upgraded Ashlands-tier equipment, strong food, healing, a reliable ranged option, and a long Rested buff. Also carry portal materials and leave an unconnected partner portal at the main base. Flat coastal ice can be a useful first portal site when deep snow makes ordinary building awkward.

The permanent pocket upgrades sold by Haldor are not required, but they help. Deep North runs quickly fill an inventory with moulds, dungeon items, food materials, tissue, and gear components.

First priority: Winding Tunnels and Frost Cores

Explore villages and other northern points of interest for Winding Tunnel entrances. These dungeons supply Frost Cores and moulds used throughout the biome. Their layouts can be confusing, so mark the exit direction with consistent lights and do not expect one tunnel to contain every needed mould.

The current route needs 20 Frost Cores for its two main processing stations: 10 for the Frigid Kiln and 10 for the Frost Foundry. Keep collecting Ice as well; the Kiln converts Ice into Liquid Frost, the fuel used to finish equipment in the Foundry.

Turn Gammeltrolls into Bloodgold

Killing a Gammeltroll leaves a petrified body rather than ordinary mineable ore. Use Ember Charges on the petrified remains—community field guides recommend aiming low at the legs—then collect the heavy Petrified Tissue.

Smelt Petrified Tissue with Coal in a Blast Furnace to make Bloodgold. This is not a conventional ore-to-weapon tier. Bloodgold enters a mould-and-cast workflow alongside the new Deep North stations.

How Deep North crafting works

  1. Find the mould for the item in Winding Tunnels or the relevant progression source.
  2. Combine the mould, Bloodgold, and required materials to make a cast.
  3. Convert Ice into Liquid Frost at the Frigid Kiln.
  4. Put the cast into the Frost Foundry and add Liquid Frost.
  5. Collect the finished weapon, armor piece, shield, or progression item.

Moulds are consumed, and Bloodgold takes time to replace. Upgrade the equipment that supports the current build before crafting every novelty. Keep the old Black Forge and Blast Furnace available; the 1.0 chain extends earlier infrastructure rather than replacing it.

Mörkhalla and Jotun Invasions

Find the Intricate Key Mould in Winding Tunnels, craft an Intricate Key, and use it at a lower Mörkhalla gate. Keys are consumed, so multiple dungeons may require multiple moulds and crafts.

Destroying the Malicious Ice inside starts a Jotun Invasion and places an event marker in an older biome. At the marker, destroy the event's Black Ice Core to end the invasion and collect one Malicious Blood. Repeat the chain three times for the amount needed at the Strange Bowl in an Aesir Passage.

Do not confuse the Mörkhalla trigger with the distant event objective. Breaking only the dungeon ice starts the invasion; the blood comes from completing the marked invasion.

The list is a field reference, not a claim that every item appears in every northern landmass. Mark each discovered dungeon and processing bottleneck on the map instead of relying on one island to provide the entire route.

Final handoff: Kall Fimbulbringer

Offer three Malicious Blood at the Strange Bowl in an Aesir Passage to reach the final encounter. Kall is a three-phase fight with strong resistances and a long recovery cost after death. Finish the station and gear route first, then use the dedicated Kall Fimbulbringer boss guide for location, summon steps, phase mechanics, and rewards.
